Summer 2000

The idea for a large sundial associated with the new Magruder Hall construction was first proposed.

Spring 2001

A preliminary plan for the sundial layout was developed in association with the spring 2001 junior interdisciplinary seminar 350: Astronomy in Early Human Culture.

Fall 2002

Planning meetings with Physical Plant personnel discussed the construction of the sundial, and final plans for the sundial were made.

Spring 2003

Planning continued while waiting for the sundial site to be available, and Dr. Carroll proposed the addition of a solar clock garden to the project.

Fall 2003

Plans for garden plantings were begun by undergraduate Abbie Smith and Dr. Carroll.

Spring 2004

Construction of the sundial began, but unexpected difficulties led to delays.

Spring 2005

Construction of the sundial was completed, and the clock garden was installed. Planting and additional garden work continued through the summer.

Spring 2006

Plants have been started in the greenhouse,  and work in the garden will soon begin again.
